A complete KS3 spreadsheets scheme of work containing 5 lessons, assessment materials, homework, activities and sample spreadsheet files.
This fully resourced unit is designed to introduce KS3 students to the key concepts and skills involved in using spreadsheets. Across five structured lessons, students develop their understanding from basic formulas through to functions, decision making, lookups and data visualisation.
The scheme contains 5 fully resourced lessons plus an assessment.
Each lesson includes:
• A complete slide deck
• Lesson activities
• Homework
• Sample spreadsheet files
• Practical spreadsheet tasks
The lessons are structured using the PRIMM teaching approach, supporting students as they move from understanding existing spreadsheet models towards independently creating their own. Activities follow the principles of Predict, Run, Investigate, Modify and Make, encouraging students to explore how formulas and spreadsheet features work before applying their knowledge to increasingly independent tasks.
The unit covers a range of essential spreadsheet skills and concepts, including:
• Using and creating formulas
• Applying common functions
• Using selection and conditional formulas to make decisions
• Using lookup functions to retrieve data
• Creating and interpreting charts
Students develop their skills gradually across the unit, learning not simply which spreadsheet features to use, but how and why they work. This makes the scheme particularly useful for developing both practical digital skills and computational thinking.
The resource is particularly suitable for KS3 Computing or Computer Science, including Year 7, Year 8 or Year 9 students developing their spreadsheet skills.
The included assessment can be used at the end of the unit to check students’ understanding and their ability to apply the skills developed throughout the five lessons.
This scheme of work can be used as:
• A complete KS3 spreadsheets unit
• An introduction to spreadsheet modelling
• A PRIMM-based approach to teaching spreadsheet skills
• A practical digital literacy unit
• A short half-term scheme of work
• Preparation for more advanced spreadsheet and data-handling activities
The combination of slide decks, structured activities, homework and editable spreadsheet files means the unit can be taught with minimal additional preparation.
A practical and structured way to teach formulas, functions, selection, lookups and charts, while using the PRIMM approach to develop students’ confidence, independence and understanding of spreadsheets.
