This lesson is part of the First World War unit of study. It can be done as a one off lesson on conscription in World War One. Students have just had a lesson on the propaganda campaign launched by the British government to encourage men to volunteer for the First World War. Students will focus on the shift in policy towards conscription in this lesson and build on their knowledge of recruitment in the First World War.

I really like the plenary idea of speaking for 30 seconds about the topic and think it'd keep students on their toes! I also like the idea of writing a letter to the Prime Minister. I'm not sure about asking students to stand if they know an answer - it brings back memories of my being afraid of such activities in my maths classes when I was at school. But it'd be interesting to know how this works in practice. Thanks for lots of interesting ideas!
