Turn worded situations into equations with this print-free Year 8 maths lesson. Pupils define an unknown, translate the information, solve their equation and interpret the answer in context. Examples cover prices, entry fees, number operations, perimeter, area, angles and equal lengths.

PRINT-FREE TEACHING
Project the lesson and let pupils work in exercise books or on mini-whiteboards. Questions, explanations, practice and answers sit together in an editable PowerPoint, ready for you to adapt to your class.

I DO, WE DO, YOU DO
Teacher examples show how to construct an equation before solving it in a clear order. Six modelling questions use a three-column, two-row arrangement with matched pairs for demonstration and guided practice. Space beneath each question supports live working. Corresponding solutions connect the algebra to ticket prices, rectangle dimensions and angle sizes.

DIFFERENTIATION ON ONE TASK SLIDE
Keep the whole class working from one screen with 8 Developing questions, 8 Secure questions, 5 Greater Depth prompts and a staged Super Challenge. Developing includes simple number statements, equal groups, prices and basic shape measures. Secure brings in fixed fees, expressions for side lengths, angle totals, ages and taxi charges.

Greater Depth asks pupils to use a mean, correct a perimeter equation, calculate an area, compare two pricing plans and create their own price problem. Pupils explain the unknown and interpret their solution.

The Super Challenge explores a rectangle with a fixed difference between its length and width. Pupils define a variable, form a perimeter equation, find both dimensions and check all four sides. They then change the perimeter and explain the effect on each dimension. The complete solution follows the question numbering on one answer slide.

AFL AND MISCONCEPTIONS
A six-question starter revisits useful prior skills. Dedicated AFL questions provide opportunities to check understanding during the lesson. A misconception task exposes the error of counting only two sides of a rectangle when forming a perimeter equation. Worked answers show how to correct the reasoning and check against the context.

An exam-style question combines equation construction with finding an area. A three-question exit check samples prices, square perimeter and angles on a straight line, helping you decide what needs revisiting.

MINIMALLY DIFFERENT PRACTICE
Three sequences vary one feature at a time: a final total, an entry fee or a perimeter. Shared instructions keep each context clear while pupils form and solve the numbered equations. Answers support comparison of how each change affects the unknown.

A bundle is a package of resources grouped together to teach a particular topic, or a series of lessons, in one place.

Bundle

Solving Equations Bundle | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths | Print Free

Editable Beyond Printables Year 8 maths PowerPoints. Project modelling, practice and answers; pupils can work in exercise books. The exact TES titles and resource numbers identify every included lesson. EXACT LESSONS INCLUDED (1) M509 — Solving Equations with Two or More Steps | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths print-free LESSON [TES 13572673] (2) M401 — Solving Equations with Fractions | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths print-free LESSON [TES 13572640] (3) M902 — Solving Equations Involving Brackets | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths print-free LESSON [TES 13572641] (4) M387 — Solving Equations with the Unknown in the Denominator | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths print-fre [TES 13572647] (5) M554 — Solving Equations with the Unknown on Both Sides | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths print-free [TES 13572663] (6) M957 — Constructing and Solving Equations | I Do, We Do, You Do | Year 8 Maths print-free LESSON [TES 13572665] Each lesson includes retrieval or prerequisite work, modelling, assessment checks, practice and differentiated questions with answers. Choose Developing, Secure or Greater Depth tasks for the class. Super Challenge questions extend reasoning within the topic. The presentations are editable. Keep questions with their matching answers when adapting the lesson for a particular class. The bundles overlap: lessons also occur in the relevant subject collection and complete Year 8 collection. Check the list before buying twice. Use the presentations in sequence or select a lesson for targeted KS3 revision. Allow pupils time to explain their methods and check their answers. Print free means worksheets are not required; pupils may need exercise books, squared paper or geometry equipment for particular tasks. These are original Beyond Printables teaching resources; they are not official Sparx products or access to the Sparx platform. The lesson files are separate PowerPoints, so a teacher can locate and reopen a single topic without working through the whole bundle. Teachers can pause on a modelled example, invite a pupil explanation, then reveal and discuss the worked answer before continuing. The guided examples support this classroom routine. The independent questions are intended for written working, not just a final answer. Pupils can compare a calculation, diagram or explanation with the displayed answer and correct it. A teacher can start a lesson with retrieval, use the checks on mini-whiteboards and direct pupils to practice suited to their current understanding. The presentation can be revisited later. For a revision lesson, select a short run of examples and practice rather than presenting every slide. For first teaching, allow more time for discussion and checking misconceptions. Where a question asks for reasoning, encourage pupils to state why the method applies. Comparing two plausible approaches can expose an error before pupils move to a new example.
