Teach pupils to turn words into inequalities with a complete, print-free Year 9 maths lesson. This editable PowerPoint follows I Do, We Do, You Do and combines explicit modelling, differentiated practice, assessment for learning and misconception checks. Project the lesson and pupils can work in exercise books or on mini-whiteboards, without printing pupil worksheets.

FROM WORDS TO ALGEBRA
Pupils define an unknown, build an expression and choose the correct inequality sign. They interpret “at least”, “at most”, “more than” and “less than”, solve the inequality and explain the answer in context.

I DO, WE DO, YOU DO
Worked examples cover fixed fees and variable costs, perimeter constraints and comparisons between two changing totals. The six-question modelling page retains a three-column by two-row grid with matched teacher and pupil tasks. Compact wording leaves space for live working. Labelled geometry diagrams support perimeter questions so pupils can connect the lengths to the expressions they construct.

DIVISION AND FRACTION CONTEXTS
Additional examples and practice cover dividing a quantity into equal parts and adding or subtracting a constant from a fraction of an unknown number. Pupils construct the inequality from the wording before solving it. Worked answers show the inverse operations, with stacked fractions used in the mathematical statements.

DIFFERENTIATION ON ONE SLIDE
The whole-class task includes eight Developing questions, eight Secure questions, five Greater Depth questions and one Super Challenge. Developing builds fluency with bounds and whole-number solutions. Secure includes bills, perimeter, comparing plans and checking a budget. Greater Depth asks pupils to correct a statement, construct pricing rules and explain restrictions on a count.

The Super Challenge asks pupils to create two problems whose least whole-number solution is 12. They choose values for a visit-cost problem and a comparison between two teams, form and solve both inequalities, then calculate both sides at 11 and 12. Complete worked constructions explain why every earlier whole-number value fails.

AFL AND MISCONCEPTIONS
Eight AFL checks support decisions during teaching. Dedicated misconception questions address whether equality is included and why a fractional number of buses is not a valid final answer. Answers and mark guidance support feedback.

PRACTICE AND CONTENTS
Twenty minimally different practice questions develop language, ticket-cost, perimeter and plan-comparison skills. Includes the editable PowerPoint, premium 4:3 thumbnail and this combined TES title and description file. Suitable for Year 9 teaching, consolidation or revision of constructing and solving inequalities. Coverage follows Sparx U337; this is an independently created Beyond Printables resource, not an official Sparx product.
