Why are core strength and stability important?
Core strength and stability provide the foundation for many everyday school activities. A strong, stable core helps children maintain an upright posture, develop shoulder stability, improve balance and coordination, and use their hands more effectively for classroom tasks.
Developing core strength and stability can help support:
- Good sitting posture for classroom learning
- Handwriting stamina and pencil control
- Fine motor development
- Balance and coordination
- Bilateral coordination
- Motor planning
- Body awareness
- Postural control
- Participation in PE and playground activities
- Self-care skills such as dressing and fastening clothing
- Endurance for learning throughout the school day
Suitable for all children as part of active learning, movement breaks and physical development.
Particularly useful for children who:
- Have reduced core strength or postural stability
- Experience gross motor or coordination difficulties
- Have Developmental Coordination Disorder (DCD)/Dyspraxia
- Are autistic and benefit from additional movement opportunities
- Need support with balance, body awareness or motor planning
- Access SEND support, intervention groups or Occupational Therapy programmes.
How & When to Use
Choose 1–3 activities to create a short 5–10 minute movement session.
- As part of a sensory circuit
- During classroom movement or brain breaks
- Before handwriting or fine motor activities
- Before PE lessons as a warm-up
- During gross motor or SEND intervention groups
- At home to encourage active play and physical development
- As part of an Occupational Therapy home or school programme where appropriate
Regular practice helps children build the core strength, stability and endurance needed for successful participation in classroom learning, play and everyday school activities.
