By the end of the lesson, children should be able to:

  • Count forwards and backwards in steps of 3
  • Recognise that each number is three more or three less than the previous number
  • Complete sequences with missing numbers
  • Identify patterns created by counting in 3s
  • Connect counting in 3s with repeated addition
  • Apply their knowledge to reasoning and problem-solving questions
Curriculum tie-in

This resource is particularly useful for Year 2 multiplication preparation and extension.

The England National Curriculum requires Year 2 pupils to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 2, 5 and 10 multiplication tables. Counting in 3s is not a statutory Year 2 counting requirement, so I would not market this as a direct Year 2 statutory objective.

Instead, this lesson provides excellent early preparation for Year 3, where pupils are required to recall and use multiplication and division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 multiplication tables.

This makes the resource ideal for confident Year 2 pupils, transition into Year 3, early Year 3 teaching, intervention and multiplication-table preparation.

Why teachers will love it
  • 23-slide interactive lesson
  • No printing or preparation required
  • Self-marking activities provide immediate feedback
  • Progresses from fluency to application
  • Includes reasoning and problem solving
  • Introduces the 3 times table through patterns and repeated addition
  • Pupils can review their quiz and retry the lesson

Perfect for whole-class teaching, independent maths practice, intervention, homework, revision or early 3-times-table preparation.
