Liberia is a coastal country in West Africa, bordered by Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Côte d’Ivoire. Founded in the 19th century by freed African Americans through the American Colonization Society, Liberia declared independence in 1847, making it Africa’s oldest republic. Its capital is Monrovia. The country’s economy is based on agriculture, mining (especially iron ore), rubber production, and timber. Liberia experienced two devastating civil wars between 1989 and 2003, which severely impacted its infrastructure and society. Since then, it has made progress toward peace and development, though poverty, unemployment, and health challenges remain significant.
