This pack covers Edexcel specification points 5.7, 5.8, 5.9, 5.12 and 5.14 (Higher): what all electromagnetic waves have in common, how they transfer energy from a source to an observer, the limited range of frequencies our eyes can detect, the Core Practical investigating refraction in a rectangular glass block, and (Higher) the effects of different wave velocities in different substances.

The Topic Mastery Sheet sets out the shared features of electromagnetic waves, gives source-to-observer examples in a table, tells the story of Herschel’s discovery of infrared with an original diagram, explains the limited range of visible light, and walks through the refraction Core Practical with a method flow chart and a graph calculated for real crown glass. The Higher section compares the speed of light in real materials and explains refraction and the splitting of white light. An exam tip comes from the Pearson CP4-5 mark scheme. A key vocabulary table gives the exact Edexcel terms, and six common errors are corrected. The Grade 8-9 stretch section explains why the ray leaving a rectangular block is parallel to the ray entering it.

The Student Exam Practice Sheet (21 marks) has six questions. They progress from a multiple choice item through energy transfer from a heater, a Core Practical results table, a hidden ultraviolet pattern that people cannot see and (Higher) refraction into water with a wavelength calculation, to a Higher prism question whose 4-mark part explains how a prism splits white light using the speeds of red and violet light. Answers are checked against the Pearson CP4-5 assessment wherever an equivalent item exists.

Project the mastery sheet for a ready-made revision lesson, set the practice sheet as homework or a timed check, or use the pack for intervention and independent study. PDF and editable Word versions are both included. Written for Edexcel GCSE Combined Science (1SC0); points that appear only in the separate GCSE Physics specification are not included.
