
A 90-minute GCSE Foundation lesson introducing the fundamentals of algebra. It covers eight topics in sequence: algebraic notation, terms/expressions/identities, collecting like terms, substitution, function machines, and simplifying expressions by addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Each topic is taught with a worked example followed immediately by a dedicated practice question. The lesson also includes a starter diagnostic on collecting like terms, a Think-Pair-Share testing an algebraic identity across multiple values, an exploration into function machine order, and a collaborative activity (the Mystery Machine Challenge) where groups work out a hidden rule from given input/output pairs. A short history section covers the origin of the word “algebra.”
