Bring story planning to life with Creative Story Writing Tags KS1 — a playful, low-prep resource that turns idea-gathering into a hands-on adventures!
Children start with a black-and-white tag page and a lively Writing Tags word bank (you can enlarge the tag page if required).
They choose at least one tag from each section (character, setting, problem, object), write the words onto their tags, and use any blanks for extra details such as names, side characters, special items, or surprises.
This tag sheet then becomes their personal writing plan.
Children can add quick sketches on the tags and colour them in, then move to the included blank story template to draft, illustrate, and write their tales.
To model the process, included is a fully completed example — “Splash! A Dog and a Frog Adventure”— plus a B&W colouring picture of the story and a colour version for display or shared reading.
Use the example to highlight vocabulary: invite pupils to spot and underline words from the word bank, discuss choices, and ideas.
The use of tags is a novel, confidence-building approach that supports sequencing, vocabulary choice, and sentence building — perfect for EYFS/KS1 transitions, guided writing, and independent literacy centres.
