This lesson investigates one of the most significant periods of religious conflict in Medieval history. Were the Crusades a Holy War or just a Greedy Adventure?
Students assess the causes, motivations and consequences of the Crusades, while developing their analytical, evaluative and decision-making skills.
Students begin by exploring the importance of Jerusalem and the Holy Land to both Christianity and Islam, before examining why so many people from across Medieval Europe chose to embark on what was presented as a holy mission.
A variety of activities encourage students to think critically about the different motives behind participation in the Crusades. Through the use of character cards, students take on the role of a Medieval individual and follow their personal journey throughout the lesson, making decisions and discovering the consequences of their actions.
The lesson includes contextual information on the Holy Land, analysis of key religious sites in Jerusalem, and a map tracing the route taken by the Crusaders. Students also investigate the significance, morality and impact of all five major Crusades through a range of differentiated tasks.
Designed to promote independent thinking and historical enquiry, students are encouraged to justify their opinions using evidence and to revisit their initial judgements at the end of the lesson to demonstrate progress in learning.
