Decimals | Whole Unit | Lesson Notes, Slides & Activities

This purposeful unit for decimals includes 6 lessons, and embeds real life scenarios throughout:

Lesson 1 - focuses on partitioning and the value of decimal numbers up to 3 decimal places, including the purpose of a decimal point.

Lesson 2 - teaches students how to compare decimals (up to 3 dp) by exploring the value of digits beyond the decimal point, and plotting these on number lines.

Lesson 3 - investigates why and how to round decimals to the nearest whole number, tenth, or hundredth .

Lesson 4 - identifies when and why to add and subtract decimals.

Lesson 5 - explores the how and why of multiplying & dividing decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.

Lesson 6 - focuses on how to multiply & divide decimals by integers .

Knowledge:

• I know that digits to the right of the decimal point represent fractional parts of a whole, where each column to the right is ten times smaller than the last (tenths, hundredths, and thousandths).

• I know that numbers can be made up of both whole units and decimal parts, anchored by the unchanging position of the decimal point.

• I know that rounding a decimal to a specified place value allows us to communicate data cleanly.

• I know that multiplying or dividing a number by 10, 100, or 1,000 causes its digits to shift symmetrically across the place value columns while the decimal point remains completely stationary.

• I know that formal calculations follow the same rules when applied to decimals.

Skills:

• I can identify, partition, and represent values within 1 and mixed numbers.

• I can locate, order, and compare decimals up to three decimal places on linear scales and number lines.

• I can round any decimal number to the nearest whole number, tenth, or hundredth by locating and analysing the determining digit.

• I can multiply and divide whole numbers and decimals by 10, 100, and 1,000, giving answers up to three decimal places.

• I can add and subtract decimal numbers with varying lengths and numbers of decimal places by maintaining strict column alignment.

• I can multiply one-digit numbers with up to two decimal places by whole numbers, and use written division methods where the answer has up to two decimal places.
