This is a fun and engaging activity on the product rule for finding derivatives. Students are given 10 challenging questions multiple choice format as the right answer is among three optional answers. The functions included are product of polynomials, the function square root of x,e^x, lnx, sinx, cosx, arcsinx and arctanx. (There are not composite functions and the chain rule is NOT required!) Students only need to know the derivatives of these basic functions and to apply the product rule to complete the problems successfully.

For each question students choose the correct letter which is a “star” of a hidden constellation. After students have solved the problems they find ten letters ( small and large alphabetic letters) which represent the ten brightest stars of the constellation. Students are also given a picture with “stars” labeled with letters. They link the ten stars they have found together consecutively and find the configuration of the hidden constellation. Students may find out what is the name of this constellation.

I hope you find this activity fun and the problems - challenging for your students!
