Teach pupils to draw line graphs from results tables with this editable, 63-slide Year 8 maths PowerPoint. Pupils develop scale choice, accurate plotting, time spacing and false origins, then reason about what recorded readings can tell us.
Designed for print-free teaching: display the tasks on screen while pupils answer in exercise books or on mini-whiteboards. Graph construction takes place in squared exercise books using a ruler. No printed grids are required.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
• One editable PowerPoint containing 63 slides.
• Six retrieval questions and six prerequisite questions, each with grouped answers.
• Illustrated vocabulary covering axes, scales, coordinates, consecutive readings and origins.
• Worked examples showing how to plot readings and use a false origin.
• Six matched I Do/We Do examples with results tables and worked graph answers.
• Twenty AFL questions, each immediately followed by its answer.
• Twenty-four controlled practice questions with answers.
• A graph-drawing task with three separate lines on one large grid.
• Eight Developing, eight Secure and five Greater Depth questions, plus a Super Challenge on the same page.
• Written answers and plotted solutions for the drawing tasks.
• A final methods reminder.
MODELLING FROM TABLES
The I Do/We Do page uses three matched pairs: (1) with (4), (2) with (5), and (3) with (6). Pupils plot equally spaced readings, handle unequal time gaps and draw graphs using a false origin. Each example has a results table and room for teacher modelling. Worked answers show points, lines, scales and labels.
AFL FOR MINI-WHITEBOARDS
The twenty checks ask for short responses rather than complete graph drawings. Pupils write coordinates, interpret readings, choose scales, calculate square intervals, identify plotting errors and explain joining order. Later checks explore false origins, misleading scales and the limits of estimates between readings.
CONTROLLED PRACTICE
Three columns of eight questions rehearse coordinates, choosing a scale to fit a maximum and locating readings above a false origin. A separate drawing task asks pupils to plot three tanks on one grid. The lines are well separated. A complete graph answer follows.
DIFFERENTIATED APPLICATION
Four labelled results tables supply the data for the drawing questions. Developing combines short scale and coordinate questions with two graphs. Secure introduces unequal time gaps, a false origin and an extra reading to insert. Greater Depth asks pupils to explain misleading displays, compare scales and distinguish recorded values from assumptions.
SUPER CHALLENGE
A 24-litre tank holds 18 litres at two recorded times. Pupils sketch different possible graphs between those readings, then test whether an extra reading proves the level stayed constant. Graph examples show why the same readings can fit different patterns. A divider separates the challenge from the other tasks.
