This resource features a model/worksheet showing the Earth in cross section, overlaid with examples of plate boundaries. The activity aims to provide a visual example to help students understand the zones within the Earth and to be able to place tectonic processes in relation to these.
The model involves an A4 base sheet to which sections are attached using a split pin to show the types of plate boundary that can be found.

2 versions, and a set of instructions are included.

  1. Blank version (including instructions). This features only the drawings for the model leaving the freedom for students to complete the labelling and add further information in line with your own lesson content, e.g. thickness or composition of zones within the Earth.
  2. Labelled version. This can be used as an activity in it’s own right where students are not required to record information, or as an example of possible labelling.

I have intended it to be a resource that is not prescriptive in its content and can be adapted to allow students to record their knowledge and understanding of the subject as they have been taught it.
Various pieces of the model can be selected for use to fit in with the teaching content and objectives of the lesson, or added on over subsequent lessons as the subject knowledge is developed.
