This complete scheme of work covers the Edexcel GCSE American West unit in full, from early settlement on the Plains through to conflict, government policy and the closing of the frontier.

Students build a secure understanding of key developments including Plains Indian society, westward expansion, the cattle industry, homesteading, and conflict between settlers and Native Americans. They also study key individuals and events such as Wyatt Earp, the Homestead Act, Little Bighorn and the Dawes Act.

Throughout the unit, students develop their ability to explain causation, consequence and change, while also practising Edexcel-style exam questions and source-based tasks.
