LESSON 5-8: This resource is part of a tailored unit to help students understand the differences between writing for Component 1 and 2. I have designed lessons separately so as to focus on all of RAIL (Representation, Audience, Industry and Language (Media) respectively. ‘The Bridge’ lessons will follow exactly the same format as the other A2 text series of lessons and will include 3 Power (1.ML/ 2. REP/ 3. IND/AUD.

This lesson focuses on:

-individualized tasks on the select 6 Representational frameworks.

-Key talking points taken from the specification:

The way events, issues, individuals (including self representation) and social groups (including social identity) are represented through processes of selection and combination

• The effect of social and cultural context on representations

• How and why stereotypes can be used positively and negatively

• How and why particular social groups, in a national and global context, may be underrepresented or misrepresented

• How media representations convey values, attitudes and beliefs about the world and how these may be systematically reinforced across a wide range of media representations

• How audiences respond to and interpret media representations

• The way in which representations make claims about realism

• The impact of industry contexts on the choices media producers make about how to represent events, issues, individuals and social groups

• The effect of historical context on representations

• How representations may invoke discourses and ideologies and position audiences

• How audience responses to and interpretations of media representations reflect social, cultural and historical circumstances and interpret them

-Specific focus on two ‘The Bridge’ representation 15 markers with support materials. They are:

-To what extent does The Bridge challenge and construct alternative representation of social groups? (15 Marks)

-Explore how representations in the set episode of The Bridge may position audiences

This resource includes printable Power Point worksheets as well as a H/W Framework pack complete with departmental feedback sheet. WARNING! One task does require terms found in MARK DIXON’S ESSENTIAL MEDIA THEORY BOOK. This resource contains embedded videos as well as the links and other helpful information/sources in the notes section of the power point slide.
