Equilibrium constant expression pressure and equilibrium constant value for A level Chemistry. Mole fractions and partial pressures. The ICE method for calculating Kp value. All this and more covered in this comprehensive lesson with questions and answers! This is a Year 13 A level lesson for Edexcel International Unit 4 – WCH14, but it can also be used for all UK exam boards. All the slides in this lesson are fully animated and include answers to every mini plenary question and exam question. The breakdown of the slides (which are best opened on Microsoft PowerPoint) is as follows:
Slide 1 - Title and 5-minute starter. The starter is a grid of four questions entitled ‘last week, last lesson, today’s learning and future learning’. Use this generic slide for all your lessons by simply changing the questions and the answers each time.
Slide 2 - Lesson objectives (see thumbnail image)
Slide 3 – definition of equilibrium constant Kp
Slides 4 – 5: in this section you can show students what mole fractions are with a useful diagram and also the formula for calculating mole fraction
Slides 6 – 8: A worked example to guide students in calculating mole fractions
Slides 9 – 12: in this section you can explain to students what partial pressure is and there is also a worked example with answers that appear on the screen as you click. Slides 11 – 12 are hidden so that you can print for students
Slide 13 – a learning pit stop task to check for learning with regards to mole fractions and partial pressures. Answers animate on the screen as you click
Slide 14 – Introduction to writing an equilibrium constant (Kp) expression. Non-gaseous species and units are discussed here
Slides 15 – 24: this section has two worked examples showing students how to solve for Kp. There are hidden slides so that you can print the questions for the students. All the steps to the working out appear in sequence as you click. The second worked example is intentionally harder than the first as it involves more coefficients in the balanced equation
Slides 25 – 32: Exam questions with mark scheme answers (included with the resource)
