I use this activity with upper KS2 children who are really struggling with their understanding of number, but it is also suitable for lower KS2. It allows them to explore the use of mathematical manipulative equipment and how it can be used to help them to 'see' numbers. There are some open-ended prompts and ideas for them to investigate. Children will need access to Base 10, place value charts (A3-sized hundreds, tens and ones charts work well) and Numicon. The activity is also a great way to spot and address some of the misconceptions and common errors that struggling children make.
