Disagreeing is a skill… and like any skill, it can be taught.
For many autistic children and young people, knowing how to disagree respectfully isn’t always intuitive. They may come across as blunt, or avoid sharing their opinion altogether.

That’s why I love using simple visual supports like this one.
It breaks the conversation into three easy steps:

  • Understand – “I understand what you mean…”
  • Share your opinion – “I think…”
  • Explain why – “Because…”

These visual scripts help children:

  • express their thoughts with confidence
  • navigate social situations more successfully
  • understand different perspectives
  • build meaningful communication skills
Sometimes, a few simple words can make a big difference.

How do you teach respectful disagreement? I’d love to hear your favourite strategies-
