A collaborative learning lesson about the extraction of iron in the blast furnace.

  • Students are split into three groups, roughly by ability. A more able student is ‘planted’ in each group to act as the leader of learning. Students work through a series of questions based on information sheets provided, in order to become ‘experts’ on their information. Sheet 2 is for the most able students and sheet 3 for the least.
  • Answers are provided for students to assess their own work.
  • The groups are then disbanded and divided into new groups, ensuring that at least one member from each original group is represented. Students then work through a double sided worksheet to summarise the extraction of iron in the blast furnace.
