Interactive flood resilience activity for geography students exploring flood causes, hydrographs, runoff, urbanisation and ways to reduce flood risk.

Students use the free Dig Earth Studio Flood Resilience Lab to investigate how rainfall intensity, storm duration, soil saturation and land cover affect river flow and flooding.

They test flood-resilience measures including woodland, green space, green roofs, detention basins, floodplain reconnection and river-channel widening, then compare results and explain why some strategies reduce flood risk more effectively than others.

The resource develops understanding of:

drainage basins and catchments
runoff and infiltration
urbanisation
storm hydrographs
peak discharge and lag time
bank-full conditions
flood risk
natural flood management
flood-resilience strategies

Students make predictions, collect results, interpret graphs and justify conclusions using evidence from the model.

You will receive three downloadable PDF files:

12-page Student Activity Pack
complete Answer Key
7-page Teacher Guide

Designed mainly for ages 14–16, with good suitability for older secondary students studying rivers, flooding, hazards, environmental management and physical geography.

The online experiment is a simplified teaching model, not a real flood forecasting tool. Students need internet access to use the interactive lab.

Natural Hazards Bundle | 3 Interactive Labs

Three interactive Earth science investigations exploring earthquakes, volcanoes and flood resilience, with structured classroom activity packs. Bring natural hazards to life with three Dig Earth Studio investigations that allow students to explore the processes behind earthquakes, volcanic activity and flooding through interactive digital experiments and real-world-style scientific reasoning. This bundle includes: Earthquake Now Students investigate live earthquake data, identify global seismic patterns, compare earthquake depth and explore the relationship between earthquakes and plate-boundary systems. Volcano Lab Students experiment with volcanic processes and investigate how changing conditions influence volcanic behaviour. Flood Resilience Lab Students investigate runoff, flood response and different flood-management measures, exploring how changes to a landscape can influence flood risk. Each resource is designed as a structured investigation rather than simply an online simulation. Students make predictions, run experiments or analyse data, record evidence and use their observations to explain Earth processes. The accompanying classroom materials include student activities, teacher guidance and answer materials where provided. Topics include: Natural hazards • earthquakes • volcanoes • flooding • plate tectonics • hydrology • Earth science • geography Suitable for secondary Geography, Earth Science and STEM lessons. The Dig Earth Studio interactive experiments are free to access online. This bundle provides the structured classroom resources designed to accompany them.
