This scheme of work focuses around the concept of place in Geography by examining first what “place” is, then going on to look at why the history of places shapes the modern Geography. This is done through looking at several places that can be seen as restricted from the general public by features such as physical geography, politics, culture or even nuclear disaster…! I have taught this for the first time this year after being inspired by my students’ interest in Area 51. It has been very well received and kids have been enthuasiastic about finding out more information on these places, and discovering some of their own. Lots of scope to expand and add your own to it too.

Lessons are as follows:
1 - What is a real place? The Case of Las Vegas
2 - Why do some places become forbidden? (requires a map of your school to be added to resources)
3 - North Korea
4 - Pripyat, Chernobyl
5 - Berlin
6 - Area 51
7 -Dismaland
