TES Description
A free interactive chemistry resource to help GCSE students learn, practise and test writing chemical formulae.

The resource contains two sections:

Ionic Formulae – students identify positive and negative ions, enter their formulae and charges, and then construct the correct compound formula by balancing charge.
Molecular Formulae – students practise recalling and writing the formulae of common elements and compounds, including simple inorganic and organic substances.

Students can choose between Learn, Practise and Test modes.

The Ionic Formulae section reinforces the key idea that:

total positive charge = total negative charge

It includes common ions such as ammonium, sulfate, nitrate, carbonate, hydroxide, phosphate and transition-metal ions, and automatically handles compounds requiring brackets and different ion ratios.

The Molecular Formulae section includes examples such as H₂, Cl₂, S₈, CO₂, NH₃, PCl₅, SF₆, CH₃Cl, C₂H₅OH and CH₃COOH.

The 10-question Test mode gives students immediate feedback and a final score, making the resource useful for independent practice, revision, homework or classroom use.

Suitable for GCSE Chemistry and also useful as foundation revision for students beginning A-level Chemistry.

Scan the QR code on the resource to open the interactive activity.

Further structured chemistry teaching and support is available through ACE Chemistry Academy.
