The teacher initially uses examples of how to work out the formulae of ionic compounds given the name of a compound only.
Students use the template provided and the periodic table to work out the formulae of some ionic compounds themselves / in groups. They then complete some examples without using the template.
The same process is repeated to work out the formulae of ionic compounds containing group ions.
A whiteboard plenary activity assesses student understanding of the lesson.
Prior to this lesson it helps if they have - completed dot and cross diagrams for ionic compounds and
- know how to work out the charge on an ion based on its position on the periodic table
