This purposeful unit for Number Operations includes 12 lessons, and embeds financial literacy throughout:
Lesson 1 - focuses on mental calculations and estimation.
Lesson 2 - focuses on adding and subtracting integers and decimals.
Lesson 3 - focuses on short multiplication.
Lesson 4 - focuses on long multiplication.
Lesson 5 - focuses on multiplying decimals by integers.
Lesson 6 - focuses on short division.
Lesson 7 - focuses on introducing long division.
Lesson 8 - focuses on practicing and applying long division.
Lesson 9 - focuses on evaluating division strategies.
Lesson 10 - focuses on using the four operations with different strategies.
Lesson 11 & 12 - a 2 lesson project where students plan a time travel expedition with a financial budget, and the need to justify their choice of methods for efficiency.
Knowledge: Add & subtract integers and decimals, short multiplication, long multiplication, short division, long division, and ental calculations and estimation.
Financial contexts: totals, change, discounts, budgeting, value
Skills: Choose efficient mental or written methods for money problems, estimate and check answers when dealing with money, compare offers and calculate best value, justify method choice (mental vs written), and use reasoning to explain financial decisions
