A laboratory guide for 11 different reactions that students should know prior to joining an A-level or IB chemistry course. I have used it very successfully; it is fun, fast and students can make good observations that lead to them writing equations with state symbols. They are simple and several follow one another. For example:
1. Magnesium + sulfuric acid (hydrogen evolved, single replacement)
2. Barium nitrate + product from [1] (precipitate of barium sulfate, double replacement reaction)
Other things covered: dehydration of a hydrated salt, decomposition, acid-base reactions (acid+hydroxide, acid+metal oxide), combustion, redox, exothermic dissolving.
One of the reactions is used as an opportunity to introduce them to Vernier data-logging, and another to carrying out a reaction to constant mass (which I also use to discuss error analysis later on).
The combustion of propane I demonstrate by doing the classic demonstration of burning soap bubbles.
