A differentiated hazard symbols sorting task covering GHS chemical hazard pictograms for KS3, GCSE, and A-level Chemistry, designed to support chemical safety, laboratory hazards, and risk awareness.
This resource includes three fully differentiated card sets (KS3, GCSE, and A-level), each containing hazard symbols, names, and clear definitions matched to curriculum expectations. Students group and match symbols to definitions, supporting discussion, recall, and scientific vocabulary development. In addition, XL A4/letter-size PDF hazard cards are included for the KS3 and GCSE sets, designed specifically for whole-class sorting activities, teacher-led demonstrations or classroom and laboratory displays.
The XL cards can be printed one per page on A4 or letter-size paper and laminated for durability, then used with blutack or magnets on a whiteboard, around the room for active sorting, or displayed permanently to reinforce hazard recognition and safety awareness. The task works well as a starter, main activity, revision task, or intervention, with an extension encouraging students to categorise hazards into physical hazards and health hazards.
Hazards covered include:
- Explosive
- Flammable
- Oxidising
- Corrosive
- Gas under pressure
- Acute toxicity
- Health hazard / irritant
- Serious health hazard
- Hazardous to the environment
- Hazardous to the ozone layer (A-level)
Perfect for Chemistry lessons, lab safety, exam revision, or practical work preparation.
