A complete 14-day Grade 5 unit covering all of CCSS 5.G — the coordinate plane (plotting, reading, distances, real-world graphing) and shape classification (triangles, quadrilaterals, family-tree hierarchy).
This is the unit where students develop the foundational geometry skills they’ll carry into middle school. Built by a classroom teacher who knows that the “every square is a rectangle” concept is one of the biggest logical leaps Grade 5 students make, and that the coordinate plane is the gateway to algebra and beyond.
Twelve fully-scripted lessons walk students through the parts of the coordinate plane, plotting and reading points, distance between points, graphing real-world data, classifying triangles by sides AND angles, classifying quadrilaterals, property inheritance, and the quadrilateral family tree — culminating in a “Treasure Map” performance task where Mia designs a treasure map and students apply EVERY 5.G skill: plotting clue locations, computing distances, classifying triangular sails and treasure boxes, and using the family tree to give shapes their most specific names.
What’s included:
- 12 lesson decks (120 slides) — fully scripted with speaker notes
- 12 worksheets (8 practice + 1 word problem + 2 bonus per lesson) + answer keys with misconception notes
- 12 exit tickets (3 questions, ~5 minutes) + answer keys with reteach suggestions
- Pre/Post Assessment — 10 questions mapped to every 5.G sub-standard
- Summative Performance Task — “Treasure Map” (5 parts, 16 points)
- Problem-Solving Rubric — 4 criteria x 4 levels
- 4 Anchor Charts — wall posters for coordinate plane, plotting & reading, classifying shapes, and the quadrilateral family tree
- 14-Day Pacing Guide
- Parent Letter (editable)

Standards: 5.G.A.1 — Use a pair of perpendicular number lines (axes) to define a coordinate system. Plot and identify points using ordered pairs. 5.G.A.2 — Represent real-world and mathematical problems by graphing points in the first quadrant; interpret coordinate values. 5.G.B.3 — Understand that attributes belonging to a category of 2D figures also belong to all subcategories of that category. 5.G.B.4 — Classify two-dimensional figures in a hierarchy based on properties.
