Guided Reading - Street Child - Berlie Doherty - Chapter 2-3 - Lesson 4 - KS2
This is Lesson 4 in a series of Guided Reading lessons based on Street Child by Berlie Doherty. This session focuses on Pages 23- 27 of Chapter 2-3. The lesson begins with a Skim and Scan activity using the PowerPoint, encouraging children to quickly locate specific words or phrases within the text. The second part of the lesson is a vocabulary task where children match key words to their definitions, using their whiteboards to record their answers.
This lesson should last around 20–30 minutes and forms part of a wider sequence of Guided Reading sessions. Aim for at least three Guided Reading lessons each week to continue developing essential reading skills such as comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Guided Reading acts as a stepping stone towards independent reading, helping children grow into confident, capable readers. It also supports learning across the curriculum by strengthening comprehension, critical thinking, and language development.
Included in this pack is a fully editable PowerPoint with a clear learning objective and a task requiring children to answer four reading questions based on Street Child, pages 23 - 27 of Chapter 2-3. A marking sheet is also included. The PowerPoint contains 13 slides to guide the session.
