Handwriting Reset is a structured, practical handwriting intervention designed for older pupils who need to relearn the foundations of clear, legible writing.

This full-year programme focuses on the core skills needed for readable handwriting: letter formation, size, baseline control, spacing and fluency. It is particularly suitable for pupils whose handwriting is difficult to read because letters are poorly formed, bunched together, inconsistently sized or placed incorrectly on the line.

The programme is designed for short, manageable 15–30 minute sessions and is ideal for use in 1:1 intervention, SEND support, literacy catch-up, tutoring, inclusion, alternative provision or small-group work.

Importantly, the programme does not rely on reading ability. Letter and word activities can be completed as visual copying tasks, making the resource suitable for pupils who may also be receiving separate phonics or literacy intervention.

Many handwriting resources are aimed at younger children and can feel inappropriate for older pupils. Handwriting Reset keeps the teaching explicit and highly scaffolded while using a cleaner, more age-appropriate intervention style.

The programme breaks handwriting down into manageable physical skills, allowing pupils to build success gradually rather than simply being told to “write more neatly”.

It is especially useful for pupils who cannot consistently form lowercase letters, write letters that are difficult to recognise, bunch letters together, struggle with letter size or have poor baseline control.

It is also suitable for pupils who mix tall, short and descending letters, need handwriting intervention alongside separate phonics teaching, lack confidence in written work or benefit from highly visual and practical learning.

Suitable for:

KS2 and KS3 handwriting intervention
SEND pupils
Dyslexia support
Literacy intervention
Alternative provision
Tutoring
1:1 support
Teaching assistants
SENCO intervention programmes
Home education

Title Handwriting Reset Intervention Bundle | 36-Session Programme, Baseline Assessment, Teacher Guide & Pupil Workbook

A complete, structured handwriting intervention programme designed to help pupils develop clearer, more controlled and more confident handwriting. The Handwriting Reset Bundle provides everything needed to assess handwriting difficulties, identify specific areas for development, deliver targeted intervention and demonstrate progress over time. Rather than relying on repetitive handwriting sheets, the programme systematically develops the foundations of successful handwriting, including physical readiness, pencil control, letter formation, letter size, baseline awareness, spacing, fluency and independent application. The bundle includes a comprehensive baseline assessment, a detailed teacher intervention guide and a corresponding pupil workbook, making it suitable for use as a full handwriting intervention across a term or academic year. What is included? 1. Handwriting Baseline Assessment – 17 pages A detailed assessment tool covering: Physical readiness Posture and positioning Pencil grip and pressure Fine motor control Pencil movement Letter formation Starting points and direction Letter size Baseline awareness Name writing Copying Independent writing Free writing Writing stamina Overall legibility Includes pupil activities, assessment criteria, scoring systems, summary pages, suggested targets and an overall handwriting baseline score out of 90. 2. Handwriting Reset Teacher Guide – 45 pages A complete 36-session intervention programme with clear teaching guidance for every session. Each session includes elements such as: Session focus Success criteria Direct teaching Practical activities Equipment Common errors to look for Workbook tasks Assessment opportunities Exit checks Teacher notes Next steps The programme progresses through eight carefully structured sections: Section 1 – Control Before Letters Developing pencil control, movement, baseline awareness and writing zones. Section 2 – Curly Letter Family Teaching controlled curved movements through letters including c, o, a, d, g and q. Section 3 – Straight and Down Letters Developing controlled downward movement and accurate formation. Section 4 – Humps, Stems and Rounded Letters Working systematically through letters including n, m, h, r, b, p, k and f. Section 5 – Diagonals and Complete Alphabet Completing the lowercase alphabet and identifying individual letters requiring additional intervention. Section 6 – Size Control Teaching pupils to differentiate between small letters, tall letters and descenders. Section 7 – Spacing Control Developing appropriate spaces between letters and words. Section 8 – Fluency and Transfer Moving from isolated handwriting practice into longer and more independent writing tasks. The programme concludes with a final handwriting assessment, allowing progress to be compared directly with the pupil's starting point. 3. Handwriting Reset Pupil Workbook – 45 pages A colourful, pupil-friendly workbook designed to be used alongside the teacher programme. Activities include: Pencil-control exercises Straight, curved and diagonal movements Baseline activities Writing-zone activities Individual letter formation Letter-family practice Error identification Target-letter activities Alphabet audits Size-control exercises Descender and tall-letter practice Letter spacing Word spacing Sustained handwriting Self-assessment Personal handwriting targets Before-and-after handwriting comparison The workbook also includes regular checkpoints and review activities so that pupils can see their progress throughout the intervention. Ideal for This resource is particularly useful for: SENCOs SEND teachers Teaching assistants Intervention teachers Primary teachers Secondary SEND departments Alternative provision Specialist settings Tutors Home educators It may be particularly helpful for pupils who: have poorly formed letters; struggle to keep writing on the line; use inconsistent letter sizes; confuse tall letters and descenders; have weak pencil control; leave inconsistent spaces; find handwriting tiring; produce handwriting that is difficult to read; need a structured handwriting intervention rather than general handwriting practice. Why this bundle is different Handwriting difficulties are often treated simply by asking pupils to write more. Handwriting Reset takes a different approach. The programme begins by identifying why handwriting is difficult and then explicitly teaches the individual skills needed for successful handwriting. Pupils progress from: control → formation → size → spacing → fluency → independent writing Regular assessments, personal target letters and review sessions allow intervention to be responsive to the individual pupil rather than following a completely generic handwriting sequence. The final assessment and before-and-after comparison also provide useful evidence of intervention impact for teachers, SENCOs, parents and pupil progress records.
