AQA A Level 1C The Tudors: England 1485-1603
The aim of this lesson is to decide Henry VII’s priorities on becoming King of England to restore royal authority.
tudents begin by considering the serious problems Henry faced on ascending the throne and decide which issues were the most urgent. With structured support and guidance, they then prioritise the four key actions Henry needed to take in order to establish stability and strengthen his rule, explaining the reasoning behind their choices.
Using the information gathered, students build a clear picture of the threats and difficulties facing the new Tudor monarch, plotting and categorising these challenges on a grid to deepen their understanding.
The lesson also develops valuable exam skills. Students analyse and evaluate a model written response to an exam-style question, deciding which mark it should be awarded before comparing their judgement with examiner feedback and the official mark scheme commentary. They then have the opportunity to plan their own response using a structured writing frame.
To reinforce learning, the plenary challenges students to create the questions linked to answers covered during the lesson.
An enquiry question is introduced at the beginning of the lesson and revisited throughout, allowing students to track their progress and build a deeper understanding across the lesson and wider unit of work.
