The lesson begins with defining standard enthalpies of formation and combustion along with practice writing equations each of them.
Hess's law is then introduced and students initially work out unknown values in simple made-up cycles with simple numbers.
The lesson then progresses on to more difficult examples taken from exam papers.
The equations are given as an alternative to using cycles but the importance of understanding cycles is stressed.
Several exam questions are also given. Answers are provided
