HTU is the key to understand place value

Once the HTU of ones is understood, repetition of the three-column principle makes larger numbers easily accessible.
Many resources follow the HTU of ones by introducing a fourth column, units of thousands, which is difficult to grasp and wrecks the elegance and simplicity of the ‘triad’ number system.
