Create a Hundertwasser-inspired snail in this KS2 and KS3 art lesson. Includes a printable template, teacher instructions and a colourful finished example.
Pupils transform a snail’s back into imaginative architecture inspired by Friedensreich Hundertwasser. They design curved building shapes, uneven windows, towers and domes, then add plants, bold colours and black outlines.
The open template provides a starting point while leaving pupils free to invent their own buildings.
What’s included:
• Teacher instruction sheet with three practical steps, design goals and a quick assessment checklist.
• A4 printable snail outline template.
• Full-colour finished example for inspiration.
Pupils practise:
• Developing architectural designs inspired by an artist.
• Combining curved lines, irregular shapes and varied windows.
• Adding towers, domes, trees and roof gardens.
• Using colour and outlines to connect the details of a composition.
Age range: 10–14 years — upper KS2 and KS3.
Time: approximately 30–50 minutes, depending on detail and pace.
Materials: pencil, rubber, black fineliner, coloured pencils or felt-tip pens.
Format: 3-page A4 PDF. Turn the template sideways before drawing.
The finished example offers inspiration. Pupils are encouraged to create their own window shapes, towers, colours and plants.
