The aim of this lesson is to evaluate the catastrophic social and economic effects of hyperinflation upon German society during the 1923 Weimar crisis.
Students dive into the historical debate surrounding Germany’s actual ability to pay its war reparations, deciding how exaggerated German economic woes genuinely were.
Moving beyond 1923, the lesson explores how Germany had been suffering from structural inflation since 1918. Students investigate why the Weimar government pursued a deliberate inflationary policy, the impact of passive resistance during the Ruhr Occupation, and how these economic choices were enforced politically upon the regime.
A major focus of the lesson requires students to assess the distinct winners and losers of hyperinflation, categorising how different social classes (such as the Mittelstand, industrialists, and working-class pensioners) were affected across the short, medium, and long terms.
The lesson concludes with a literacy plenary alongside AQA source-based exam question practice, complete with scaffolded support and model structures if required.
