IB Math AI HL 4.16 – Confidence Intervals
This slide deck introduces confidence intervals as a way to estimate the true average of a large group based on information from a smaller sample. Students are shown how to use sample data—such as a mean value and spread—to build a range that is likely to contain the true population average, along with a chosen “confidence level” (typically 90% or 95%).
The presentation explains how increasing the sample size or using a lower confidence level affects the width of that range, and why it is not accurate to say there is a certain probability that the population mean is in a given interval; rather, we are confident in the method over many repeat samples. Worked examples guide learners through situations where the population’s overall spread is known (so the normal model is used) and where it is not known (so the t-distribution is required).
By the end of the lesson, students are comfortable constructing intervals, interpreting what they mean in context, and confidently commenting on claims about population averages. Fully aligned with IB Math AI HL Topic 4.16 – Confidence Intervals for the Mean, this deck provides both the conceptual background and methods needed for exam-style problems.
