Pupils’ love being creative with this hands-on project. Students are tasked with creating a mini prototype piece of flat-pack furniture for furniture giant ‘Ikea’. I have used Cardboard and envelopes (to personify flat-pack packaging) with a craft knife but this project could be adapted for other materials such as HIPS or wood. Also Included are differentiated resources and student/teacher examples.
In this series of lesson, students are introduced to the benefits of flat pack furniture in logistics and manufacturing through class discussions and group tasks. They then create their own piece of ‘to-scale’ cardboard furniture that can be disassembled and flat packed. Students work in teams of four with a skills mapping sheet and are each assigned the job role of ‘Designer’, ‘Manufacturer’, ‘Quality Control’ and ‘Team Leader’. There is are also guides included to help with the design and assembly of their product.
