Includes: Independent Learner Board, Do/Do Not Section, Student Self-Assessment Grid,
detailed 5Bs chart (Brain, Board, Book, Buddy, Boss) with visuals and detailed guidance for developing and encouraging independent learners.

This board absolutely changed my year! Introduced this with a group of very needy SEN and EAL students who were convinced they couldn't do anything themselves, didn't value their own knowledge, and refused to write unless they were sure it would be perfect. TAs and I were exhausted and behaviour was a complete mess unless they had 1 on 1 attention.
After introducing this Board and the 5Bs they were a completely different class and progress was astounding. Learning attitude is now extremely positive, they're completely different children! Even dyslexic students now trying spelling on their own and loving that they are showing independence.

If you've found yourself saying "It's ok not to know, but it's not ok not to try" then this is for you.

Can be used for Primary, Secondary, EAL, SEN, top sets, any class that really needs to build independence.
In line with changes to GCSEs that require more independent learning, the earlier you start the better it will be for them in their exams and life beyond.

Suggested Introduction:
Print on thick card or paper and attach to your student's book.
Have a class discussion on independent learning and what that involves. Discuss the 5Bs of Independent Learning (Brain, Board, Book, Buddy, Boss). Decide as a class what independent learners DO and DO NOT do. Eg saying "I dunno" or "I can't do it" in the Do Not list, "Help others" in the Do list.
End of each lesson students are expected to fill in the date and tick where they thought they were for the lesson. Give lots of praise where students have at least tried to be independent.
During lessons, if students do any of the Do Not's, ask them to have a look at the 5 Bs chart before coming to the TA/Teacher.
Offer rewards for independence, such as SIMs Achievement Points etc.
