Interoffice Post Work Task Box for SEND: Sort by Room, Department + Name

Sorting post is a real job in schools, hospitals, offices and councils, and it makes an excellent independent work station for secondary and post-16 learners with SEND. This task box looks and feels like real work, not a primary sorting game.

What’s included:

• Three levels: Level A (match the envelope to an exact label), Level B (use a staff directory to decide where it goes) and Level C (handle the twists: misspelt names, missing departments, post for someone who has left)
• Self-check codes so learners can check their own work
• Blank cards to add the real rooms and names from your own setting
• A data sheet and a 10-session accuracy graph for progress tracking
• Teacher notes on setting it up and building independence

How to use it:

• Independent work stations in special schools, resource bases and post-16 provision
• Preparation for a school office job, work experience or a supported internship
• TA-run sessions with clear, consistent data
• Evidence towards the Employment and Independent Living outcomes in Preparing for Adulthood and EHCP reviews

Level C is the important one. Real jobs rarely give you a perfect match, and learning what to do when something doesn’t fit, including asking for help, is the skill employers value most.

I’m a teacher with 20+ years in education, and I built this from the post-room job my own learners did around school.

Print on card, laminate, and store each level in its own bag. Note: the cards use the US word “mail” in places; it’s the same task.

Differentiation ideas: start with five rooms at Level A, grow to the full directory at Level B, and add Level C twists only when accuracy is consistently high on the graph.
