Teach pupils to interpret line graphs with this editable, 60-slide Year 8 maths PowerPoint. Pupils read values, calculate changes and ranges, compare lines and estimate between recorded readings.
Designed for print-free teaching: all graphs are provided on screen, so pupils can respond in exercise books or on mini-whiteboards without drawing grids or needing printed worksheets.
WHAT IS INCLUDED?
• One editable PowerPoint containing 60 slides.
• Six retrieval questions and six prerequisite questions, each with grouped answers.
• Illustrated vocabulary and a worked interpretation example.
• Six matched I Do/We Do examples with answers.
• Twenty AFL questions, each immediately followed by its answer.
• Twenty-four controlled practice questions using three shared lines, with answers.
• Eight Developing, eight Secure and five Greater Depth questions, plus a Super Challenge.
• Larger-graph differentiated task pages and an optional all-in-one differentiated slide.
• Answers for every level and a worked Super Challenge solution.
• A final methods reminder.
MODELLING AND VOCABULARY
Introduce maximum, minimum, range, consecutive readings and estimates using a labelled graph. The worked example models reading a value, describing a decrease and estimating between readings. Three matched I Do/We Do pairs focus on reading values, finding a maximum and range, and calculating change.
AFL FOR MINI-WHITEBOARDS
Twenty short-response checks cover readings, maximum and minimum, changes, range and the greatest rise. Two-line questions ask pupils to compare volumes and gaps, identify when one recorded value first exceeds another and estimate an intersection. Pupils distinguish a direct reading from an estimate; no full graph drawing is required.
CONTROLLED PRACTICE
Three separated lines share a square grid. Across three columns of eight questions, pupils read volumes, calculate change from an initial reading and compare two lines. Whole-minute readings and half-minute estimates are clearly distinguished in the answers.
CHOICE OF DIFFERENTIATED DISPLAY
Use the larger-graph pages or display the optional single-slide version containing Developing, Secure, Greater Depth and Super Challenge together. The whole class can work from one projected slide, with a divider separating the Super Challenge. Both layouts use the same tasks and answers.
PROGRESSION THROUGH REASONING
Developing secures readings, ranges and changes. Secure introduces comparisons, estimates and changes in gaps. Greater Depth challenges claims about range, mean, overall change and unobserved values between readings.
SUPER CHALLENGE
Exactly one reading is wrong. Given the corrected mean and range, pupils determine how the total must change, find every possible correction and explain why the remaining option fails. The challenge demands deduction and justification, rather than a longer list of routine calculations.
