Develop confident interpretation of scatter graphs with this editable 96-slide Year 9 PowerPoint. Pupils describe relationships in context, compare correlation strength, identify outliers and challenge conclusions that the data cannot support.
Created by Beyond Printables for Year 9, Unit 25, U277: Interpreting Scatter Graphs.
THE MATHEMATICS
The lesson covers positive and negative correlation, no clear linear correlation, strength versus steepness, reading coordinates and units, outliers, curved relationships, prediction reliability and correlation versus causation. Contexts include practice time and scores, car age and value, and ice-cream sales and sunburn.
WHAT IS INCLUDED
• Six retrieval questions and answers.
• Six prerequisite questions and explained answers.
• Visual teaching examples comparing direction, strength and outliers.
• A one-page I Do / We Do overview with six graphs and matched example pairs.
• Three larger paired modelling pages and six individual examples with explained answers.
• A further example exploring a clear curved relationship.
• Twenty individual AFL question-and-answer pairs with visible graphs and short mini-whiteboard responses.
• Forty-eight practice questions across four compact question pages: comparing graphs, interpreting a shared graph, examining car data and evaluating claims.
• Consolidated practice answers with explanations.
• A one-page differentiated task containing eight Developing, eight Secure and seven Greater Depth questions, plus a visible Super Challenge.
• Detailed unit grids and enlarged differentiated options for classroom display.
• Explained differentiated answers.
• A ten-part Super Challenge investigation across two question pages, with two pages of explained answers.
• Further reasoning about correlation and causation, plus three exit checks with answers.
A SUBSTANTIAL SUPER CHALLENGE
Pupils investigate two groups that each show a negative trend but show a positive trend when combined. They calculate group averages, explain the conflicting patterns, consider prior attainment and propose fairer comparisons. They then construct their own data, regroup the same observations and write a report separating the evidence from causal claims.
PRINT-FREE TEACHING
Display the graphs and questions directly. Use mini whiteboards for AFL and exercise books for longer explanations and the investigation. No worksheets need to be printed. Teachers can choose between compact and enlarged activities, while the editable text and diagrams allow adaptation to the class.
