This lesson assesses the causes, events and consequences of the Korean War, one of the first major military conflicts of the Cold War era.
Students begin by investigating modern-day Korea through a stimulating video-based activity, annotating key information onto a map to develop geographical and contextual understanding.
They then explore the origins of the Korean War in 1950, examining how Cold War tensions between communist and capitalist powers contributed to the outbreak of conflict.
Through a variety of differentiated tasks, students analyse the key events of the war, assess the roles played by international powers, and evaluate why the conflict ultimately ended in an armistice rather than a decisive victory. They will also consider the long-term consequences of the war and why the Korean Peninsula remains divided today.
The lesson encourages students to think critically about the continuing significance of Korea in world affairs, including the challenges posed by North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme and its place in modern international relations.
As part of the wider unit enquiry, students revisit the question, “Why did civilians fear for their lives during the Cold War?” Learners build and refine their responses throughout the course, creating a developing record of how nations and ordinary people reacted to the tensions and uncertainties of the nuclear age.
Designed to be engaging, accessible and challenging, this lesson develops students’ knowledge, analysis and evaluation skills while making complex historical events easy to understand.
