This KS1 and SEND Pre-Writing Patterns and Shapes resource is designed to help children develop pencil-control and fine-motor skills needed for confident handwriting.
The pack contains 14 black-and-white activity sheets featuring a variety of lines, shapes, symbols and simple patterns. On each page, every row shows a different pattern for children to look at carefully. Children then copy the pattern into the boxes underneath before colouring their completed designs.
The activities provide opportunities to practise controlled pencil movements, directionality, visual tracking and accurate copying. These early pre-writing movements help prepare children for letter and number formation.
The resource can support:
• Pencil control and pencil grip
• Fine motor development
• Hand-eye coordination
• Visual-motor integration
• Pattern recognition and copying
• Controlled line and shape formation
• Attention and concentration
• Early handwriting skills
The black-and-white format allows children to add their own colours using crayons, colouring pencils or felt-tip pens, providing additional opportunities to practise controlled colouring and staying within boundaries.
A blank template is included at the end of the pack. Children can use this to create their own patterns for a friend to copy, or teachers can use it to design patterns matched to an individual child’s needs.
