Capture your classes imagination with this Space art bundle. Perfect for the KS2 topic of Space and linked to the recent launch to the Moon. 5 fully planned lessons included. No art experience required.
THE 5 LESSONS:
Lesson 1: Planets of the Solar System
Pupils draw and colour all eight planets with accurate, distinctive visual features — Jupiter’s swirling cloud bands, Saturn’s spectacular rings, Mars’s rust-red surface — using chalk pastels or watercolour on dark paper. Labelled in the style of a scientific diagram. Stunning results that double as a science display.
Lesson 2: Astronaut Portrait and Spacesuit Design
Pupils design themselves as a future space explorer — drawing a personalised spacesuit complete with a gold visor reflecting Earth from orbit, a custom mission patch, national flag, name badge and instrument panels. The visor reflection technique is the show-stopping moment of this lesson.
Lesson 3: Galaxy and Nebula — Mixed Media Artwork
The most spectacular lesson in the pack. Pupils use wet-on-wet paint, salt texture, chalk pastel layering and white gel pen stars to create a glowing galaxy or nebula directly inspired by images from the Hubble and James Webb Space Telescopes. The results never fail to amaze.
Lesson 4: Moon Surface — Chalk and Charcoal Study
A masterclass in tonal drawing. Pupils use charcoal and white chalk on grey paper to create a dramatic crater landscape — complete with ejecta rays, mare regions and three-dimensional shading that makes the surface look genuinely lunar. Develops real drawing skill alongside scientific knowledge.
Lesson 5: Rocket Launch — Dynamic Composition
Pupils draw a technically accurate rocket mid-launch with a full exhaust plume colour gradient from white-hot core to grey billowing smoke, shock diamonds, steam clouds and atmospheric effects. Connects directly to Science forces — thrust versus gravity.
EVERY LESSON INCLUDES:
Step-by-step teacher instructions — clear enough for a supply teacher, detailed enough for a specialist. No art experience required
Space Fact Sheet — covering the solar system, all eight planets, the history of space exploration from Sputnik to the James Webb Telescope, famous astronauts including Katherine Johnson and Mae Jemison, and a Did You Know section
Pupil instruction card — display on the board or print for desks
Full SEN differentiation guide — covering fine motor needs, visual processing difficulties, autism and sensory needs, and lower attaining pupils
2 extension activities per lesson with an Extra Challenge option for early finishers
Pupil self-assessment sheet with science knowledge questions and written reflection
Teacher assessment grid with a full Beginning / Developing / Achieved rubric
