This lesson is designed to introduce students to contrasting colours, including the scientific demonstration and explanation of their effect on the eye as well as its use by Artists such as Andy Warhol to attract and engage the viewer. Students will create their own flower pattern using a grid and will then apply contrasting colours to the each flower and its background using colouring pencil.

The lesson consists of the first ten slides, which include: a starter or 'hook'; objectives; a visual demonstrate of contrasting colours and their effect on the retina; differentiated learning criteria; a self assessment and a plenary. The final twelve slides are printable resources to include: a flower reference sheet; a grid sheet for drawing the pattern; step by step sheets for drawing and adding colour to the pattern; the starter handout and a pre-drawn flower pattern for lower ability students. There are also slides that can be introduced for higher ability students to use paint and/ or collage as well as success criteria hand outs for those student who are painting.
