This is a complete unit of work covering at least 8 hours of teaching (though it usually takes me at least 12!)

It is suitable for key stage 3, exploring the idea of crime and punishment, primarily within a UK context.

The resource includes four key topics, which are covered over multiple series of lessons:

  1. Crime , including why people commit crimes and whether crime is always evil.
  2. Aims of punishment with a focus on reformation, retribution, deterrence and protection, including evaluation and application of each one.
  3. Prisonsthrough an exploration of the prison system within the UK and critical comparison to other countries systems, especially Halden in Norway.
  4. Death penalty including the laws regarding the death penalty and use of the death penalty in the UK and worldwide, the purpose of the death penalty as well as arguments both for and against the death penalty, including religious and secular arguments.

There are a range of tasks and activities, such as worksheets, gap-fills, video resources and a 12-mark assessment.
