An excellent resource which incorporates dual coding and simplifies AQA GCSE combined science syllabus to help pupils understand how atoms turn into ions and how to show ionic bond formation through dot and cross diagrams.

The learning questions covered:

  • How do atoms form into ions?
  • How are groups linked to the formation of ionic compounds?
  • How do you draw dot and cross diagrams to show how ionic bonds have formed?

The lesson incorporates scaffolded learning to help pupils build a bigger picture about atoms, ions and bonds using the Periodic table.

There are plenty of opportunities to model dot and cross diagrams before encouraging the class to attempt exam practice by themselves.
