La caja de las letras

Combine time capsules with the Instituto Cervantes!

Activity. Time capsules are fascinating. Here are the instructions for your Spanish class to assemble a time capsule. First, they must answer many questions. What will they include? Will it represent the class, the school, the place where they live, or something else? What will it be made of? Where will they put it? When will it be opened?

Reading. That leads us to the Instituto Cervantes time capsule project. To preserve Hispanic culture, they have created the Caja de las Letras project. Great Hispanics, writers, dancers, singers, actors, and more have each created their own time capsules at the Instituto Cervantes headquarters in Madrid. It´s a wonderful initiative.

Introduce students to great Hispanics. In some cases, we know what they have placed in their personal capsules but in many cases, we have no idea. Some will be opened soon, others many years from now.

In addition, the Instituto Cervantes also has a letterbox outside their building.
This is not a regular letterbox. You can only post letters to two Spanish poets, the Machado brothers. Both have been dead for many years!
