The aim of this eight-lesson bundle is to cover the League of Nations section of the AQA GCSE Conflict and Tension 1918–1939 course, exploring its aims, organisation, successes and eventual failure to maintain international peace.

Students begin by examining why the League was established after the First World War before exploring its structure, commissions and work during the 1920s.

They then investigate the decline of international cooperation, focusing on the Manchurian and Abyssinian Crises, before considering the key question: was the League of Nations destined to fail?

The lessons include a range of activities to develop students’ knowledge, encourage them to analyse historical evidence and reach their own judgements. Suggested teaching strategies, retrieval practice and differentiated learning tasks are included throughout to support learning and reinforce key knowledge.

There are also opportunities to practise typical AQA GCSE exam questions, including source analysis, write an account, the longer 16-mark judgement questions with the additional 4-mark question. Guidance and model answers are included where appropriate to help students develop their exam technique.

The eight lessons are organised as follows:
Lesson 1: Introduction to the League of Nations
Lesson 2: The Structure of the League of Nations
Lesson 3: The Commissions
Lesson 4: How Successful Was the League of Nations in the 1920s?
